Quinoa
Red Quinoa (pronounced keen-wah) is imported by Granovita, and sold through wholefood shops.
Buy from Holland and Barrett.
On the packaging Granovita claims to believe in Fair Trade, claiming that they pay a fair price to the farmers. However, there is no commitment to Fair Trade on the Granovita website, and no definition of "Fair Price".
BUT
Enquiries with Granovita revealed the following:
Bolivia and Fair Trade: Since 1998 our manufacturers have founded an association with Bolivians involved in growing quinoa. Even though the goal of the company is to buy and sell, we also aim to contribute financially and technologically, providing tools and training. We aim to improve the living standards of the Bolivian peasants working with us and more than 1000 families are assisted by this means. More specifically, the company has supported all farms by:
Cash payment in US $ on supplies of products.
100% of the cost of organic certification.
Support on seeds by advanced payment to buy product to be seeded every year.
Paying a 10% more expensive price than the local market price to provide a real bonus to the farmers in our system.
We finance all technical and logistical costs to export a highly cleaned product to Europe.
Over and above this, we have constantly raised our volumes with the local farmers and have given them a chance to stay in their villages and escape the catastrophic economic situation experienced in many South American countries at present.
Looks Fair to me.
